Definition

A part-time finance director is an experienced FD who leads a company's finance function for a set number of days each month. They oversee reporting, controls, cash, budgeting and the finance team, giving a growing business board-level financial leadership without the cost of a full-time appointment.

What it means

In UK SMEs the finance director title is often used where larger companies would say CFO. A part-time FD typically owns the monthly management accounts, budget, cash flow forecast, financial controls and relationships with the bank and auditors, and reports to the managing director and board.

Compared with a fractional CFO, the part-time FD role usually leans more towards control and reporting than fundraising and investor strategy, although the two overlap heavily in smaller businesses.

When you need one

A part-time FD makes sense when the business has outgrown its bookkeeper or external accountant, when management accounts arrive late or cannot be trusted, or when the owners need a reliable financial partner for decisions about growth, borrowing or investment. Leadership Services provides part-time finance directors from its bench of senior directors, from £1,795 per month.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a part-time FD and a fractional CFO?

There is a lot of overlap. A part-time FD typically concentrates on accurate reporting, controls, budgets and running the finance team. A fractional CFO is usually more strategic, focusing on funding, investors, valuation and long-term financial planning. Many SMEs need elements of both, and the title matters less than the scope agreed.

How many days a month does a part-time FD work?

It varies with the size and complexity of the business. Many SMEs start with two to four days a month, rising during year end, a funding round or a transaction. The time is agreed in advance and can be adjusted as needs change, which is one of the main advantages of the model.
