Definition

A 13-week cash flow forecast is a rolling, week-by-week projection of a business's cash receipts and payments over the next quarter. It shows the expected closing bank balance each week, so directors can spot funding gaps early, manage creditors and reassure lenders or investors that liquidity is under control.

What it means

The forecast is built on a direct cash basis: actual expected receipts from named customers and actual payments such as payroll, VAT, PAYE, rent and suppliers. Thirteen weeks covers a full quarter, which is long enough to see quarterly tax payments and short enough to stay accurate.

How it works in a UK business

Each week the finance lead rolls the forecast forward, compares last week's forecast with the actual bank position, and explains the difference. Over time this variance check builds confidence in the numbers.

Lenders, private equity investors and insolvency practitioners routinely ask for a 13-week forecast when a business is under pressure, refinancing or going through a transaction.

When you need it

Use one when cash is tight, during rapid growth, through a restructuring or sale, or whenever a covenant or overdraft limit is close. Many businesses keep one permanently as a basic control.

Frequently asked questions

How is a 13-week forecast different from a budget?

A budget is usually an annual, profit-based plan set before the year starts. A 13-week forecast is cash-based, weekly and rolling, and is updated with real data every week. It answers a narrower but more urgent question: will we have enough cash in the bank each week over the next quarter?

Who should own the forecast?

The finance lead should own it, but it only works if sales, operations and purchasing feed in realistic timings. A fractional CFO often builds the first model, sets the weekly review routine and trains the internal team to keep it updated.
