Day rate

Also known as: Daily rate

Definition

A day rate is the fee charged for one day of a contractor's, consultant's or interim or fractional director's time. It is the standard pricing unit for senior freelance work in the UK, and the total cost of an engagement is usually the day rate multiplied by the number of days agreed.

What it means

Day rates are usually higher than the daily equivalent of a permanent salary, because the individual covers their own holidays, pension, training, insurance and periods between engagements. Comparing a day rate directly with salary therefore overstates the difference.

Rates for senior directors vary with function, seniority, sector, location and the complexity of the work. Specialist roles and short, intensive assignments tend to command higher rates.

How it works in a UK business

Interim managers are commonly paid on a day rate for each day worked. Fractional directors may also quote a day rate, but many engagements convert it into a fixed monthly retainer for a set number of days, which makes budgeting simpler. Leadership Services publishes fractional pricing from £1,795 per month.

Frequently asked questions

Why are day rates higher than salaries?

A day rate has to cover costs an employer would normally pay, such as holiday, pension, sick pay, training and equipment, as well as unpaid gaps between assignments. The client also avoids employer National Insurance, recruitment fees and long notice periods, so the true cost difference is usually much smaller than it appears.

Is a day rate or a retainer better?

A day rate suits short or unpredictable work, such as an interim assignment or a one-off project. A retainer suits ongoing fractional leadership, because it guarantees a set amount of time each month and gives predictable costs. Many engagements start on day rates and move to a retainer once the scope is clear.
