Definition

A fractional CIO is a senior chief information officer who works with a business part-time to lead IT strategy, systems, suppliers, data and security. They align technology with business goals, giving SMEs board-level IT leadership without the cost of a full-time CIO or IT director.

What it means

The CIO focuses on the technology the business runs on internally: infrastructure, business applications such as ERP and CRM, data, cyber security, IT suppliers and the IT budget. A fractional CIO sets the IT strategy and roadmap, manages managed service providers and makes sure investment delivers value.

This differs from a CTO, who usually leads the technology a company builds and sells, such as a software product.

When you need one

Typical triggers include an ERP or system replacement, rising IT costs with unclear value, a cyber incident or insurance demand, an acquisition that needs integrating, or a board wanting a credible plan for AI and digital transformation. Leadership Services provides fractional CIOs from its bench of senior directors, from £1,795 per month.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a fractional CIO and a fractional CTO?

A fractional CIO looks inward at the systems, data and suppliers that run the business. A fractional CTO looks outward at the technology the business builds, such as a software platform or product. SaaS companies usually need a CTO, while manufacturers and professional services firms more often need a CIO.

Does a fractional CIO replace my IT support provider?

No. Most businesses keep their managed service provider for day-to-day support. The fractional CIO sets direction, holds the provider to account against service levels and contracts, and plans larger changes such as cloud migration, new systems or security improvements, so the provider can focus on reliable support.
