Definition

A fractional CTO is a senior chief technology officer who works with a business part-time to lead product technology, software architecture and engineering teams. They are most common in SaaS and tech-enabled scale-ups that need experienced technical leadership but are not ready for a full-time CTO.

What it means

A fractional CTO owns the technical direction of the product: architecture, technology choices, engineering process, security by design, hiring and managing developers or external agencies, and translating the commercial roadmap into a realistic delivery plan.

They also represent the technology to investors, explaining scalability, technical debt and risk during fundraising and due diligence.

When you need one

Founders often bring in a fractional CTO when a non-technical team is relying on an agency or freelancers, when the product needs re-platforming, when development has slowed, or before an investment round where technical due diligence is expected. Leadership Services provides fractional CTOs from its bench of senior directors, from £1,795 per month.

Frequently asked questions

Can a fractional CTO write code?

Some do, but that is not the main value. A fractional CTO is hired for judgement on architecture, team structure, delivery process and technical risk. Paying senior executive time for routine coding is rarely good value, so most fractional CTOs lead developers or agencies rather than replacing them.

When should a fractional CTO become full-time?

Typically when the engineering team grows large enough to need daily leadership, when the product is the core of a significant funding round, or when the business can comfortably afford a full-time CTO. A good fractional CTO often helps recruit and hand over to their permanent successor.
